| Bio: |  Sorve is the child of Arek and Therem, the two sons-of-the-flesh of Esvans Harth rem ir Estraven, Lord of the domain of Estre in Kerm Land, part of eastern Karhide (their genetic father is not named and, culturally, irrelivant). At the time of his entrance into the bar, Sorve is 20 years old and has inherited his Lordship after the death of his grandfather a few months after Genly Ai's visit to their hearth (not long after the end of the book). Sorve is from a large, wealthy family, his genetic father (Therem) having served for several years as Karhide's prime minister -- closest advisor to the mad King Argaven XV. Therem was exiled to the neighboring country of Orgoreyn as a traitor for supporting Genly's quest as envoy to have Karhide join the Ekumen, but after his death, as a condition of Karhide's membership, Genly demanded that Argaven revoke Therem's banishment, and pardon his crimes -- lifting the shadow over the hearth of Estre. As a Karhider, Sorve is quiet, serious, cautious, blunt, and cannot pronounce the letter "l" (though the Bar's translation will make it seem as if he does in common speech, proper names will be mispronounced). As a Gethenian, Sorve is a perfect androgyne: neither male nor female for all but a few days each month (kemmer). Physically, Sorve is under 5 feet tall with a petit, almost feminine body. As a condition of the laws concerning incest, Therem left Estre forever when Arek became pregnant. Arek met an untimely and unspecified death when Sorve was six years old, leaving him to be raised by the other adults in his hearth -- not an uncommon upbringing for a Karhidish child. (Note: While the manner of Arek's death is not specified, certain clues in canon suggest it may have been suicide.) As Sorve grew older, he often exchanged letters with his father, even into Therem's exile. Now as a young adult, he shares his father's curiousity with other worlds and other ways, and a willingness to learn and compromise -- the same attitude that branded his father "unpatriotic" but will prove essential to the future of Gethen in alliance with the Ekumen.
